DSE Exclusive Interviews
Real talk with real musicians.
Mac Demarco
Raised in Edmonton, Canada, Mac Demarco spent his childhood days slinging homemade wine-bottle molotov cocktails into traffic. In his spare time, he also pursued music. After moving to Vancouver, and again to Montreal, Demarco began recording what would become the eccentric, altered-vocals tracks of the Rock and Roll Nightclub EP. In October, 2012, the full album followup, 2, garnered praise from critics for its intimate narrative lyrical content, as well as its largely relaxed sonic qualities.

Jacco Gardner
Born in the Netherlands, and inspired by 60's baroque psychedelia, Jacco Gardner sought to replicate this sound. Blending keystones of the subgenre, such as harpsichord lead-ins and jangly guitars, he presented to the world the tunes found within his self-produced debut album, Cabinet of Curiosities, in February, 2013. On the album, Gardner brings to the table material that is both soothing and haunting, romantic and surreal, and it works: the psychedelic is not heavy enough to weigh down the flow of the album, nor the pop light enough to make the sentiment seem artificial. In this way, he shows that he is not simply some musician copying a bygone style, but a true pioneer, an individual adding his own thoughts and emotions to the music.

Andrew W.K.
With a legacy as storied and vibrant as Andrew W.K., its not easy to simply describe him as an individual, but rather to list his achievements. After countless albums, guest appearances on talk shows, motivational and commencement speeches, and even hosting his own pyrotechnically themed Cartoon Network show, the man who issued the Party Hard manifesto album "I Get Wet" is still going strong, and shows no signs of letting up! However, there is more to Andrew than just the usual "partying" slurs and references: he is an individual who is working for the betterment of humanity, albeit through alternative means.

Hank & Cupcakes
Hailing from Tel Aviv, but currently residing in Brooklyn, Hank and Cupcakes take their charming moniker from Bukowski lore, and bring a unique kind of energy to the stage. Forgoing a DJ duo style of organization, for a Ting Tings-esque drum set and synth setup, these two are pioneering an exotic amalgamation of "wall of sound" and brilliant light shows. And what's behind all the flashy decorum? Blunt, genuine themes and rhetoric.
